Hello, my name is Jessica Robertson and I grew up in Franklin County, VA. I graduated from Franklin County High School in 2007. I began my post-secondary education at Longwood University in the Elementary Education program. After my first two years at college, I decided to also pursue middle school licensure in science and mathematics. Lastly, I decided to tack on an endorsement to teach Algebra 1. Following my graduation from Longwood in December of 2010, I was hired as a middle school Algebra 1 teacher at Martinsville which is where I had done my student teaching. I finished out the 2010-2011 school year there and taught Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 the following school year. I loved my experience there and soon discovered that I would like the option of teaching higher level math. I applied for admission into Radford University's Secondary Education with a Mathematics Concentration program and was accepted. Since I already had most of the education and math courses from my first bachelors degree, I was classified as a senior with 38 hours needed. During the fall semester of 2012, I took five MATH courses and one STAT course for a total of 18 credit hours. I also worked a full-time job third shift at the Sheetz in Radford and tutored math part-time in the LARC. It was a very difficult, very busy time for me. In the spring, I tried my best to prioritize my schooling and only work as much as I absolutely needed to in order to pay the bills. I did well with my course and work load, and graduated with my second bachelors degree in May of 2013. I interviewed with Roanoke City Public Schools and was offered a job to start that summer with their summer school program which I accepted. During that summer and into the regular school year, I dated a young man named J.D. that I had met in Blacksburg as he was attending Virginia Tech during my time at Radford. In January of 2014, he proposed to me and we were married in June of 2014. He and I bought a home in the Glenvar area in March of 2016 where we live happily. In June of 2018, we welcomed our first child, Zachary, into our lives. He is such a precious and fun addition to our family.
In August of this year, I started my ninth year of teaching (seventh at William Fleming High School). During my teaching experience, I have taught Algebra 1 and 2; Geometry; Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis (AFDA); Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry (FST); and Precalculus; all of which I thoroughly enjoy. I love teaching: the challenges it poses and the rewards it brings.
In the spring of 2019, I graduated with my Master's degree in Mathematics Education. I loved the process of earning that degree because I learned so much. Whenever I learn something new and exciting with regards to teaching, I carefully plan the steps needed for implementation and learn so much along the way. The thing that I've learned that I believe is paramount is that my students, this generation, is so talented and has so much potential. Anything and everything that I can do to enrich their experience, to awaken their minds, and to believe in them is something that will strive to do forever.
